The \'Hawk\' at work!

Hold on to your shorts. We’ve got a new beer on tap starting RIGHT NOW! Hawk’s Vengeance.

This beer is a Belgian Double India Pale Ale. This is the second beer in our Hawk Presents Series. For those of you who don’t know about Jen ‘The Hawk’ Hawkins here is a picture. Jen has been here for a while now and rocks as a server (she’s a pretty cool person too).

Anyway, Jen won this year’s PIMP MY BREWHOUSE Competition and her prize was to design a beer, name it, and brew it with us. She was all fired up to brew a Double IPA and while we were brewing it The Hawk sustained a second degree burn from the hop back, hence the name 2nd Degree Double IPA.

It was a standing joke that Jen was drinking throught the beer to “ease her pain” but I think the truth is that she told so many people; we sold through it so fast we’ve decided to make a whole series of beers in her honor. They’ll all be super hoppy and super strong.

Now in case you haven’t gotten the irony here Hawk is about 80 pounds soaking wet with her clothes on, she LOVES hops, and you know us…any excuse to use this currently scarce commodity. My boss good naturedly yelled at me for using so much of the Sweet Green Love in this one beer, but I think it’s worth it. You will too.

For you beer nerds out there like me here is a bit about the style Belgian Double IPA:

Most modern beer styles originated with European traditions. We tend to carefully study European beer styles and produce them as authentically as possible, especially beers that are or were hard to find. Craft Brewers have embraced Belgian style beers for years because of their unique brewing history, and complex flavors. We replicate classics like Dubbel, Tripel, and Saison. There are times when we will make a traditional style our own, usually by adding lots of American hops and elevating the alcohol content.

American Pale Ale is a style that evolved in this way. Hoppy Belgian style beers are changing the direction of influence. With the explosion in popularity of big hop bombs in America, European brewers began taking cues for beer style from the U.S. Craft Beer Community! Belgian brewers are brewing hoppy pale colored ales like Chouffe & Urthel. Several small Belgian breweries are even making 100+ IBU beers: Urthel Hop it, Struise Mikkeller (130IBUs), and picobrewery Alvinne’s Gaspar (115 IBUs) just to name a few.

Based on our love for all things Belgian and all things hoppy, we’ve brewed a hugely flavorful beer. Hawk’s Vengeance. This beer is truly multi-cultural with hops from the U.S., German Pale Ale Malt, and spicy Belgian yeast. Its’ flavor is a train wreck on your tongue, the kind you have to slow down the car to watch! The beer is only lightly filtered, so there’s  some yeast left which gives the beer a just a touch of haze to go with its’ deep copper color. At 81 IBUs the beer has plenty of bitterness and hop flavor but it’s so strong and alcoholic that the hops are balanced out. Alcohol by volume is 9.7%! The nose is super complex with huge aromas of tropical fruit. You’ll smell pineapple, banana, and a touch of orange oil. The aromas are from Centennial hops, and all of the high alcohols. Served in a footed ale glass.

While Belgian IPA is still very much a style in development, this beer is set to rock.

Color:  Copper

Body:  Medium

Flavor:  Complex. Fruity and very, very hoppy

Overall Character:  A huge, extremely hoppy beer brewed using American hops and spicy Belgian yeast. An American original.

OG:  1.088

IBUs:  81

ABV:  9.7%

Bob IS Rasputin! The full Summer wheat beer lineup is rolling out right now. Big Bad Bob Barrar (Head Brewer, IHB Media) and I have been duking it out to see who can get the most wheat beer on tap and I think we’re ‘gonna win this round!

Bob is a great guy who makes world class beer all of the time and yes, he does look like RasputinDoesn’t he? (You know…stabbed, poisoned, shot, drowned…?)  If he were to put on all if his GABF medals he’d have a hard time walking around! Oh, and he may very well be the biggest man on the planet.

So who better to pick a fight with?

Wit, Hefe, and Dunkel Weizen, Raspberry Wheat, and Berliner Weisse are on tap now and we’ll have American Wheat Beer on by the end of next week. Come and get it, Bobby!

If you’ve never heard of Berliner Weisse before, but you like lemonade then you owe it to yourself to try some. The style is a regional specialty of Berlin; referred to by Napoleon’s troops in 1809 as “the Champagne of the North” due to its lively and elegant character. Only two traditional German breweries still produce the product and it’s hard to find even in craft breweries here in the U.S.

The beer itself is low in alcohol, but not low in flavor. It’s bone dry and VERY sour. In Berlin you’ll be asked if you’d like it with raspberry syrup or woodruff syrup. The syrup is used to cut the sourness of the beer and gives it cool colors to boot. We had to buy Woodruff from a German Deli in Texas! How crazy is that?  The little old ladies wrapped each bottle in the German flag and bubble wrap. How cute!

Come buy for a glass with or without woodruff. I LOVE sour beer! Here’s a picture of a traditional Berliner Weiss Glass. Note the straws. Who knew?

A note for those of you who’ve asked: We’ve also got a Framboise on tap, but it’s just for mixing with the wheat beers to make Dirty Weisse. I’ve got a super secret stash that we might pull out later in the season. Sorry about holding out but we’ve got to have enough to make it to September.

Upcoming beers include a Double Belgian IPA and Cannibal. The Cannibal isn’t exactly a wheat beer but it is a great summer refresher, so we’re claiming it for the list! Oh, and did I mention it’s STRONG? Yeah, baby!

Our Witbier fermentingWell it’s Friday here in Iron Hill Land and I’ve got some great news to start out with, our Belgian Wit is on tap and it is killer!

I just had a few sips with my bagel. That’s a nice way to start out the day for sure. In case you aren’t aware we are running an entire summer of wheat beers this year as part of our Summer of Weisse promotion.

The official kickoff is Monday June 2nd, but we’re getting a little head start with the Wit Beer. Here is a photo of the Wit a couple of weeks ago when it was fermenting like crazy. I never get tired of seeing that!

Now the bad news.  The bottle shop at F.X. Matt Brewery in Utica, New York caught fire last night. You can read the whole story here

The Matt brewery is home to some of our favorite brands including the Saranac line of beers. It is also the location the brews a majority of the bottled product for The Brooklyn Brewery. I am happy to report after talking with my friend Keith Miller at the brewery that everyone got out uninjured. It looks like the packaging facility will be a total loss.

The Matt Brewery was founded by an incredible man named F.X. who fought tirelessly throughout his life for small brewers. We wish the Matt crew the best of luck in rebuilding and wish to once again extend our gratitude for everything they have done for our industry. Keep your heads up gang.
